In short

  • You can send money from Nigeria to a US bank account through Juicyway or through a Nigerian bank.
  • A bank payment can go through other banks on the way, and each one can charge a fee before passing it on.
  • Most providers charge you a transfer fee, and give you an exchange rate below the market rate.
  • Compare the dollars each provider says your recipient will receive, because that amount already includes the fee and the rate.
  • A transfer to a US bank account needs your recipient's full name, account number, and routing number.

People in Nigeria pay tuition, contractor invoices, and software and service bills in the US, and move their own money to accounts there. A US bank account receives dollars, so your provider changes your naira into dollars as part of the payment. You pay through the rate it uses, as well as through the fee.

What you need to send money to the US

Most providers ask for:

  • Amount you want to send
  • Recipient's full name, exactly as it appears on their bank account
  • Recipient's US bank name
  • Recipient's account number
  • Routing number, the nine-digit number that identifies a US bank
  • Recipient's address, where the payment method requires it

Get these details from your recipient, enter them exactly as they give them to you, and check every digit before you confirm.

Ways to send money from Nigeria to the US

Money transfer providers

Money transfer providers change your naira into dollars and send the payment in one step. Some charge a transfer fee and give you a rate close to the market rate. Others don't charge a transfer fee and give you a rate further below the market rate. The one without a transfer fee isn't always the cheaper one, so compare the dollars each provider says your recipient will receive.

With a Juicyway USD account, you enter your recipient's US bank details and send from your naira balance. Your app changes the naira into dollars as part of the payment and shows the exchange rate and the dollar amount before you confirm. The dollars arrive in your recipient's own US bank account.

Your Nigerian bank

Many Nigerian banks make international transfers to the US. You give the bank your recipient's US bank details, and the bank changes your naira into dollars at its own rate and charges a transfer fee.

Banks send international transfers through SWIFT, the network they use to send payment instructions to each other, and the payment often goes through other banks on the way. The other banks in the chain are called correspondent banks, and each one can charge a fee before passing the payment on. Your bank's quoted fee doesn't include those charges, so your recipient can receive less than you expect.

What a transfer costs

The transfer fee is what a provider charges you to make the payment. Your provider shows it before you confirm, so it's easy to compare.

The exchange rate is the second charge, and it's harder to see. An exchange rate tells you how much one currency costs in another, like this: $1 = ₦1,325. The mid-market rate is the rate halfway between the buying price and the selling price on the world market, and it's the rate most online currency converters show. Most providers give you a rate below the mid-market rate, and the gap between the two, called the margin, is what they keep.

On October 6, 2026 the mid-market rate was $1 = ₦1,325. A provider offering $1 = ₦1,390 is charging you ₦65 on every dollar. On a $1,000 payment, that's ₦65,000 more naira for the same $1,000 your recipient receives, before any transfer fee.

How long it takes

Once the payment reaches the US banking system, an ACH credit arrives on the same banking day, the next banking day, or two banking days later. Nacha rules don't permit an ACH credit to arrive later than that.

A wire gets to the recipient's bank the same business day, as long as the sending bank submits it before the daily deadline of 6:45 pm Eastern Time.

For a payment starting in Nigeria, the total time also depends on the route and the checks banks make along the way. Confirm how long your provider takes before you make a payment that's due on a set date.

Can you send naira to a US dollar account?

No. A US bank account receives dollars, so your provider changes the naira into dollars as part of the payment.

The conversion happens whether you send through Juicyway or through your Nigerian bank. What differs is the rate each one uses, and whether you see it before you confirm. Your Nigerian bank sets the rate it uses, and other banks apply their own charges on the way. Your Juicyway app shows the exchange rate and the dollar amount before you confirm.

Send dollars with Juicyway

Juicyway is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and licensed for money transmission in 48 US states. Juicyway accounts are available in US dollars, pounds, euros, and Canadian dollars in one app.

To send dollars to a US bank account:

  1. Open a Juicyway account and verify your identity.
  2. Request a USD account. In your Juicyway app, open USD, tap 'Account details', tap 'Request account', then confirm the request. A request can take more than five minutes to complete, so refresh the app to see your account details, which sometimes appear before the confirmation email arrives.
  3. Tap 'Deposit' and fund your naira balance with a transfer from any Nigerian bank account.

Once your USD account is ready, tap 'Send', enter your recipient's US bank details, check them, and confirm. You can send from your naira balance without converting first. Your app changes the naira into dollars as part of the payment, at the rate the app shows, and the dollars go to your recipient's US bank account.

You can send dollars already in your USD account whenever you choose, so you don't have to convert naira on the day a payment falls due. The exchange rate moves from day to day, so the dollar amount can change while you wait.
