In short

  • You can receive your Upwork earnings in US dollars in Nigeria without a domiciliary account. A Juicyway USD account gives you a real US account number and routing number in your name.
  • On Upwork, add the Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) method and enter your Juicyway US account details. Upwork charges no fee for this method.
  • When your earnings become available depends on the contract: five days after a client approves a milestone on fixed-price work, and the following Wednesday on hourly work billed that week.
  • A new withdrawal method takes three calendar days to activate, so add your Juicyway details before your earnings are available.
  • Once you withdraw, the ACH transfer reaches your Juicyway USD account within two banking days at most. Weekends and US bank holidays pause the clock.
  • When your dollars arrive, keep them, send them, or convert to naira in the app at the rate it shows, when the rate suits you.

Getting paid on Upwork is straightforward. The choice that decides how much of your money you keep is the payout method, because it determines whether your earnings reach you as dollars you control or as naira converted for you at Upwork's partner bank rate.

Can Nigerians get paid on Upwork?

Yes. Upwork works with freelancers in Nigeria, and you can receive payment for your work. The platform offers a few ways to withdraw: direct to a local Nigerian bank, direct to a US bank, a US dollar wire, and third-party providers like PayPal and Payoneer.

Withdraw to a local Nigerian bank and Upwork's partner bank converts your dollars to naira at its own rate before the money reaches you. Add a US bank account instead, such as a Juicyway USD account, and your earnings arrive as dollars, which you convert to naira yourself when the rate suits you.

How Upwork pays freelancers

When a client pays, the money moves through Upwork's billing cycle before you can withdraw it.

On fixed-price contracts, the client funds each milestone in escrow before you start. After you submit the work and the client approves it, the funds clear five days later, which is Upwork's standard security period. Project Catalog orders follow the same five-day clock.

Hourly contracts run on a weekly cycle. Upwork bills your client for the hours you logged that week, Monday to Sunday, and those earnings become available ten days later, on the following Wednesday.

Once your earnings become available, they show in your Upwork balance. You can withdraw manually whenever you want, or set an automatic withdrawal schedule.

How to receive your Upwork earnings with a Juicyway USD account

To receive your earnings in dollars, you need a US account that accepts ACH transfers. A Juicyway USD account gives you one, a real US account with an account number and a routing number in your name.

Here is how to connect it to Upwork:

  1. Sign up on Juicyway, verify your identity, and request a USD account.
  2. Sign in to Upwork on a desktop or mobile browser.
  3. Go to Settings, then Withdrawals.
  4. Choose Add a method and select Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH).
  5. Enter the US account number and nine-digit routing number from your Juicyway app, and choose Checking as the account type.
  6. Make sure the name on the account matches your verified Upwork name.
  7. Save the method.

Upwork activates any new withdrawal method after three calendar days. Once it is active and your earnings clear, select Withdraw now and choose your Juicyway US bank details.

How long it takes to get paid

Two timelines decide when the money reaches you: when your earnings become available on Upwork, and how long the transfer takes.

Your earnings become available on the schedule above, five days after approval on fixed-price work, or the following Wednesday on hourly work. Once they clear and you withdraw to your Juicyway USD account, Upwork sends the money over the ACH network. An ACH transfer reaches your account within two banking days at most. Weekends and US bank holidays are not banking days, so a withdrawal you start on a Friday takes longer to arrive than one you start on a Monday.

What you need before you withdraw

Upwork asks for a few things before you can take your money out.

First, enter your tax information. Non-US freelancers complete a W-8BEN form, which confirms you are not a US taxpayer.

Second, verify your identity, which usually means a government-issued ID and a short verification step.

Third, match the names. The name on your Juicyway USD account must match your verified Upwork name, or Upwork can reject the withdrawal. Because a new method takes three calendar days to activate, add your Juicyway details before your earnings become available.

One more thing worth knowing: once you start a withdrawal, Upwork cannot cancel or reverse it, so check the details before you confirm.

Naira or dollars: how to receive your earnings

From May 1, 2026, the Central Bank of Nigeria directed international money transfer operators to pay diaspora remittances to beneficiaries in naira. On Upwork, you choose how to receive your earnings. If you take the local bank route, Upwork's partner bank will convert your dollars to naira at its own rate before the money reaches you. If you use a Juicyway USD account, your dollars arrive as dollars so you choose when to convert and see the rate before you do.

When your dollars reach your Juicyway USD account, you decide what happens next. Keep them in dollars, send them to another USD account, or convert to naira in the app at the rate it shows, when the rate suits you. You see the rate and any fee before you confirm, and you can send the naira to any Nigerian bank account.
